Why Volunteer?

One of the best ways you can help your child have a happy, successful elementary school experience is by volunteering. There are many different opportunities to donate your time to the school. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact the PTA volunteer coordinator, Daniella Sadeh at danisadeh@gmail.com. Let us know what events interest you, or what special talents you have, by completing the PTA volunteer survey or by contacting Daniella.

MENTORING

Be a Mentor for a Zilker Child. Zilker Elementary School is looking for volunteers to help mentor at-risk children during the school day. The commitment is typically an hour a week and involves meeting with a child at lunchtime or in the classroom to assist the child with school work and to help provide general mentoring support. This is a very rewarding opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child at our neighborhood school. Please consider volunteering this school year. To volunteer, contact Austin Partners in Education: Austin Partners In Education 1601 Rio Grande, Suite 300A Austin, TX 78701 Phone: 512.637.0900 Email: apie@austinpartners.org
Web: austinpartners.org.

IT'S MY PARK DAY

Volunteers are needed each fall and spring for It's My Park Day to take care of our school and neighborhood shared park. For more information or to volunteer, contact littlezilker@gmail.com . We need volunteers to assist with planting, pruning and mulching. Please help us out with your time or with a donation for new plants in the park. Work day volunteers will be pampered with coffee and snacks. This is a fun bi-annual event and everyone is welcome to come. Can't make it, but want to help out??? Please consider making a donation so we can put additional plants into the new butterfly garden next to the Bluebonnet Street Playground. Please email kimmcknight@austin.rr.com for information on how to donate.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS:

BookPeople Fundraiser (October/November)
Support literacy and the local economy by buying books at BookPeople during the annual Zilker week.  For all books and merchandise purchased by Zilker families and friends, the store will donate 20 percent of net sales to the Zilker PTA.

Zamboree Carnival (October)
Zilker’s famous carnival. Each class sponsors a different booth staffed by parents from that class (e.g. face painting, bean-bag toss, etc.). This is a huge event that needs volunteers to plan/staff all kinds of activities:setting up, chaperoning games, raffling tickets, media coverage, silent auction, etc.

Zilker Backyard Concert (November)
The event of the year! This rockin’ concert will be held in the outdoor stage at the back of Zilker. Volunteers are needed to help with decorating, setting up sound equipment, and selling tickets, concessions, t-shirts, etc.

Book Fair (February)
Held in the library, this event is always well attended and a huge success, thanks to our librarian, Ms. Kraal, and her faithful volunteers! Helpers will be needed to work different sales shifts during the fair.

The Z Art Auction & Sale (March)
This event raises funds for Zilker PTA’s Arts in Education program. Both student and community art is auctioned/sold. Volunteers are needed to help set up, cashier, monitor bids and clean up.

Spring Fling (April)
PTA’s largest fundraiser of the year. In 2009, the event raised more than $20,000, most of which went to purchase a new computer lab for students. Volunteers are needed to serve on the planning committee, solicit local businesses for donations, marketing/promotion, monitoring bids and silent auction tables, etc.

Movie Night (April)
Curl up in a blanket and watch a family-friendly show under the stars. The event is supported by Alamo Drafthouse. Volunteers are needed to sell tickets and concessions.

Mother’s Day Jewelry Sale (May)
Students collect unwanted jewelry donations that are then sold to raise money for Zilker. It’s a fun way for Zilker students to pick out something special for Mom! Volunteers are recruited early May to help with the sale.

COMMUNITY EVENTS:

Diez y Seis (September 16)
This community fiesta is celebrated with food, music, and dancing. Volunteers are needed to help set up, decorate, keep the food lines organized and staff the “Bring Your Own Plate” dish washing area.

Track and Field Day (April/May)
Organized by our P.E. teacher, Ms. Ponzoha, this 2-day event is full of athletic activities with an emphasis on team spirit. Parents are needed to help set up the course, sell concessions and chaperone events.

Science Fair (January)
This amazing one day event requires really dependable volunteers. Volunteer work includes recruiting judges from outside Zilker, setting up the display area and monitoring the displays during the fair.

Coffeehouse Talent Show (March/April)
Zilker’s famous talent show... where students get to perform their unique talent for friends and family. We need help with the logistics of running the show (making sure performers are lined up and ready) etc.

Sock Hop (May)

Dance party with games and other fun events appropriate for children led by a disc jockey. This year, the Zilker Student Council will help run the event, but additional adult volunteers are required for planning, setting up/decorating, security and selling refreshments.

Yearbook (Ongoing)
This requires people to take/collect photos, scrapbook, work with layouts, etc.
